Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL) Years of Potential Life Lost is a measure of causes of mortality that are responsible for taking the highest number of years of life based on life expectancy. Years of potential life lost are calculated by multiplying the number of deaths per age group by years of life lost as determined by the difference in age at the time of death and life expectancy.
