BUILDING CONSTUCTION CAVITY WALLS

Cavity walls. A Cavity Walls consist of; Two 'leafs' of walling material which is separated by a cavity or air space.

Cavity wall A wall of two leaves tied together, with wall ties, the leaves are separated by at least 50mm.

Cavity wall A cavity wall has many design features that a solid wall hasn’t. However these design features will mean nothing if the standard of work, by the bricklayer is of a poor quality.

Cavity walls. The cavity between the two ‘leafs’ also provides the building with added thermal insulation. The cavity reduces heat loss, unlike a solid wall, which escapes through conduction.

Cavity walls. To carry the loads. Reduce heat loss. Provide an aesthetic quality. To provide security. Provide fire resistance

Cavity walls.

BRICK CAVITY WALL: Cavity wall:- In case of brick cavity wall, each leaf is half brick thick. This type of walls are capable of taking load of two storied residential building.

However, if heavier loads are to be supported, the thickness of inner leaf can be increased in the multiple of half-brick thickness. The cavity between two leafs may vary from 40mm to 100mm in width.

The cavity start 15 cm below the damp-proof course level. The bottom of cavity should be at least 15 cm above the outside ground level.

POSITIN OF CAVITY OF FOUNDATION LEVEL At foundation level, the various alternatives are adopted in the provision of cavity. The cavity may either be extended up to the concrete base or up to the 15 to 30 cm. below the damp proof course

POSITION OF CAVITY AT OPENINGS AT THE DOOR OR WINDOW OPENINGS, THE COSTRUCTIONAL TREATMEMT GIVEN TO THE CAVITY WALL REQUIRES SPECIAL CINSIDERATIONS. At the sill level, it is always advantage to keep the back of the sill flush with the back face of the external wall.

At the top of openings of doors and windows, stone or brick arch or concrete lintel is provided to carry the loads from the structure above the opening.

WALL TILES The two leaves or walls are tied together with the metallic or terra-cotta ties to obtain structural stability.

WALL TILES They are spaced 90 cm apart horizontally and 30 to 45 cm. apart vertically in staggered positions.

ADVANTAGES OF CAVITY WALLS The moisture cannot enter from the outer leaf to the inner leaf. The cavity walls provides good insulation against sound. The problem of efflorescence is very much reduced. The construction of cavity wall is economical. The load on the foundations are reduced because of cavity inside the wall.
