INTRODUCTION : The Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI), Maiduguri was established by the Research Institute Order (Establishment Act) of 1975 as a multi-disciplinary Research Institute. However, following the re-appraisal of the mandates and functions of National Research Institutes in 1987, LCRI became a crop-based Research Institute with the National mandate to conduct research into genetic improvement of Millet, Wheat and Barley; improvement on the total farming systems of the North-East agro-ecological zone covering Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and Yobe States; Conduct Agricultural extension and research liaison services with relevant Federal and State Ministries, primary agricultural producers, industries and other users of research in collaboration with National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS).

CONSTRAINTS (1) Inadequate and sometimes late release of funds both at Research Institutes and ADP levels. (2) Inadequate number of extension personnel to service the farmers thus making the extension farmer ratio to be low (3) Inadequate quantity of farm inputs such as fertilizers and agrochemicals limit increased production. (4) Farmers’ inability to access loan facilities from credit institutions affected extent of agricultural production. (5) Some farmlands were destroyed by flood that occurred this year. (6) The insecurity in the North east zone affected extent of agricultural production this year.
