The Climate in Britain

Weather vs. Climate Weather refers to the short term conditions of the atmosphere on a local scale. Climate refers to the long term (30 years) conditions of the atmosphere on a regional scale. Britain has an Oceanic Climate.

Temperatures In general, Britain has mild winters and warm (not hot) summers. The coldest months are January and February and the warmest are July and August. There is a smaller range in temperature.

Rainfall Rainfall is abundant due to prevailing winds from the Atlantic Ocean. On average it rains one in three days in the UK.

Landscapes Due to the cooler temperatures and constant rainfall, Britain has greener landscapes (meadows, forests, deciduous trees etc.)

Greener Landscapes

Meadows

Deciduous trees – Beech Tree

Seasons Britain has four distinct seasons of fairly equal length - spring, summer, autumn and winter. In winter it is colder and wetter and the days are shorter than in summer.

Agriculture Agriculture in Britain often focuses on cereal crops. Crops grown in Britain: WheatBarleyPeasPotatoes

Questions What is the difference between weather and climate? What type of climate does Britain have? What are the temperatures like in Britain in winter and in summer? Why is rainfall abundant in Britain? What is the average number of days that it rains in Britain? Why does Britain have greener landscapes? How many seasons does Britain have? What are they called?
