LOSSIE GREEN GASWORKS FORMER GASWORKS SITE LOSSIE GREEN, ELGIN, SCOTLAND ACTIVE BETWEEN 1830 – 1933 PRODUCED COAL GAS, RESULTING IN MANY BY-PRODUCTS
CONTAMINATION SITE CONTAMINATED BY SEVERAL SUBSTANCES (18 IDENTIFIED) CRUCIALLY, DEPOSITS OF ARSENIC, TAR AND CYANIDE WERE FOUND MORE THAN 1m DEEP, SO LITTLE THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH
DANGERS INVESTIGATIONS REVEALED HIGH IMPACT ON GROUNDWATER ADJACENT RIVER LOSSIE ALSO AFFECTED FUTURE FLOODING COULD BE CATASTROPHIC FOR THE WILDLIFE OF THE RIVER AND MORAY FIRTH
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS 2 REALISTIC SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE: TRANSPORT ALL CONTAMINATED SOIL TO TREATMENT PLANT SOIL WASHING - REMOVE CONCENTRATED CONTAMINANTS FROM SOIL
SOLUTION TRANSPORTING ALL THE SOIL (6000 TONNES) TO TREATMENT PLANT FAR AWAY WAS DEEMED TOO COSTLY SOIL WASHING OPTION WAS CHOSEN, DUE TO MANY ADVANTAGES…
SOIL WASHING ONLY 12% OF SOIL NEEDED TO BE LANDFILLED SAVED MORE THAN 1000 TRUCK MOVEMENTS REMAINING SOIL WAS SAFE TO RE-USE REDUCED AMOUNT OF MATERIALS NEEDED TO REPLACE REMOVED SOIL LESS THEN HALF THE CARBON EMISSIONS AND FUEL CONSUMPTION THAN THE OTHER OPTION
REMEDIATION SPECIAL EQUIPMENT IMPORTED FROM BELGIUM WORKERS NEEDED SPECIAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING FOR WORKING WITH CYANIDE SOIL FED INTO THE PLANT,PASSED THROUGH SEIVES, AND IS THEN CLEANED CONCENTRATED CONTAMINANTS REMOVED, THEN TAKEN TO LANDFILL REMAINING ‘WASHED’ SOIL PLACED BACK INTO GROUND
COMPLETION UPON COMPLETION OF THE REMEDIATION PROJECT, AROUND 3600m³ OF SOIL HAD BEEN WASHED TOTAL COSTS WERE OVER £500K, FUNDED BY SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE GRONTMIJ CONSULTANCY WON THE ‘MOST SUSTAINABLE REMEDIATION PROJECT AWARD’ FOR THE WORK
