Hint: What is the power source for the CD player? Daily CSI Can you solve it? Sept. 9 3 Someone stole a CD and a portable CD player from the mall music store. Shady Shrew claims he saw the stork unwrap those items and immediately start listening to music. Slylock Fox strongly suspects Shady's account is false. Why? Hint: What is the power source for the CD player?

Solution The CD player needed batteries before it could be used. Shady Shrew made up the lie. The stolen items are in his bag.

September 11 The tool illustrated below is used to measure _______________. temperature volume weight pH 2. The riders on the three beams on the balance measure different gram quantities in which of the following orders from the front beam to the back beam? tenth grams, grams, hundred grams ten grams, grams, hundred grams ten grams, hundred grams, grams D) grams, hundred grams, ten grams

Read the information below and then answer the questions. Daily CSI September 12 Read the information below and then answer the questions. SpongeBob loves to grow flowers for his pal Sandy, who loves big, colorful flowers. He found a new brand of seeds coated with a special “booster” fertilizer that said it would produce huge flowers. He planted 5 of the new seeds in one container and 5 of the old brand of seeds in another container. He placed both containers on a sunny windowsill and watered them every day. He measured the diameter of each flower, which is shown in the chart. Old Seeds 10 cm 12 cm 14 cm 6 cm 8 cm New Seeds 16 cm Which group was the control? 5. Which seeds are the best for big flowers? 2. What is the independent variable? 3. What is the dependent variable? 4. What is the average diameter for each group?

Booster fertilizer on the new seeds 2. What is the independent variable? 3. What is the dependent variable? Size or diameter of the flower Old = 10 cm, New = 12 cm 4. What is the average diameter for each group? 5. Which seeds are the best for big flowers? New seeds w/ the booster

September 16 1) In the following research question, what is the responding variable? Does the length of the grass affect the distance a golf ball will travel? 2) An experiment is being done to determine how light affects the growth small zinnia plants. One plant is placed in full sunlight, the second in a shaded area, the third in an unlit closet. What is the independent variable in the experiment?

Answer: Distance the ball travels 1) In the following research question, what is the responding variable? Does the length of the grass affect the distance a golf ball will travel? Answer: Distance the ball travels An experiment is being done to determine how light affects the growth small zinnia plants. One plant is placed in full sunlight, the second in a shaded area, the third in an unlit closet. What is the independent variable in the experiment? Answer: Location of plant

Sept. 17 Case Summary Shady Shrew insists he will win today’s rowboat race. He claims his custom telescope glasses will allow him to focus on the finish line for the entire race. Shady says this will give him a psychological advantage over the other contestants. What does Slylock Fox think?

Solutions Even if it were true that concentrating on the finish line improved performance, it wouldn’t matter. Rowing is performed by facing backward to the direction of travel. Shady would be staring at the starting line!
