Swift Curricular Approvals: What Does it Take? Michigan State University - Office of the Provost – University Curriculum and Catalog Academic Program Submission Cycle – Are you surprised by this? Top Ten Reasons for Curricular Delay 1.Unaware of MSU’s academic governance process 2.Unaware of curricular policies and procedures 3.Unaware that training is available 4.Failure to follow online form instructions 5.Incomplete information submitted 6.Did not share curricular change with those who may be affected 7.Did not request appropriate sign-offs and approvals 8.Unaware of academic program submission deadlines 9.Did not respond with requested information for the UCC in a timely manner 10.No college representation when curricular items are reviewed by the UCC

Swift Curricular Approvals: What Does it Take? Michigan State University - Office of the Provost – University Curriculum and Catalog NEW Request – Requires Funding 5. University Curriculum & Catalog, Office of the Registrar UCUE consultation UCGS consultation TEC consultation 3. Department 4. College 7. University Committee on Curriculum Subcommittee A, B, or C 7. University Committee on Curriculum Subcommittee A, B, or C Provost Determination 6. Provost Consultation (including Office of Planning and Budgets Analysis) 2. Dean/Provost Consultation 1. Initiation of Program Concept by Department/Dean Upon receipt of consultative commentary the Provost will determine if the program request will be forwarded to the University Committee on Curriculum for approval of its curriculum and degree requirements. 7. UCC Full Committee 8. Faculty Senate 9. Statewide Academic Program Review Dean/Provost Conversation during College Planning and Budget process Lack of Dean/Provost Conversation This consultation will give consideration to the appropriateness and priority of the program in the long-range development of the University. Does the request have funding implications? If so, the request requires unit reflection for budget projections and planning, and must follow normal administrative channels. Are there any academic policy implications? Is the program academically sustainable? Does the request involve teacher certification? Are approvals/signoffs required? These should be requested via the online request form. If submitting a new academic program, is Statewide Academic Program Review required? (About 10% require review) Note: the Office of the Provost is required to submit materials to the Presidents Council of State Universities of Michigan Office six weeks prior to the meeting at which the proposal is considered; the Academic Affairs Officers Committee meets four times a year. To align academic planning and curricular change, ALL requests for NEW funds must be included in the College's annual planning letter. Failure of the Dean to consult with the Provost will halt the process at step 5. until the Provost has determined that consultation can occur with the Dean of The Graduate School, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and others as appropriate.

Faculty Senate Statewide Academic Program Review (name changes only) 1. Department 2. College 4. University Committee on Curriculum Subcommittee A, B, or C 4. University Committee on Curriculum Subcommittee A, B, or C Provost Determination Provost Consultation with Dean (including Office of Planning and Budgets Analysis) After consultation with the Dean and the Office of Planning and Budgets, the Provost will make a determination about the forwarding of the program request to the University Committee on Curriculum for approval of its curriculum and degree requirements. 4. UCC Full Committee Have you requested the necessary sign-offs and approvals? A sign-off is a request for support or commentary (act of collegiality). Units have 14 days to respond. Indication of support or non-support is not binding. An approval is a request for support (required). Interdepartmental programs and programs that use another unit’s course as a requirement in a program require approvals. Sign-offs and approvals need to be requested on the online request form. Failure to request these will delay the program request.
