Referee Academy Assistant Referee Involvement Developed by: Alberto Marin & Tarek Kahn January 2013

CNRA 2 Objectives In this presentation, you will learn When the AR needs to get involved or not 2. How the AR should get involved

CNRA 3 Basic AR Responsibilities 1. Balls out-of-bounds 2. Direction of/teams awarded re-start 3. Offside Infractions 4. Substitutions 5. Penalty Kicks-Keepers early moves/Goal line 6. Misconducts/Infractions – Out of Referee’s View 3

Have you ever been in... ? Assistant Referee Involvement

CNRA 5 Beyond the Basics ARs have an obligation to assist effectively without being over-involved Reaching that fine balance is critical for a successful performance of the Official Team

CNRA 6 Beyond the Basics ARs must assist when the... 1.Referee needs or asks for help 2.Integrity of the Game demands it

CNRA 7 Assisting the Referee Assisting the Referee 1. Game Critical Decisions -Foul Inside vs. Outside the Penalty Area -Carding Players -D.O.G.S.O -Misconducts – Cautions vs. Send-off 2.Off-the-Ball Incidents −Infraction and/or misconducts not seen by the Referee

CNRA 8 Assisting the Referee 3.Player Kicks 4.Trigger Events that may lead to Mass Confrontation −Triangle of control 5.Visual Request from Referee: What/Where?

CNRA 9 Assisting the Referee Assisting the Referee 6.Referee’s Position is off: − Wrong angle of view − Far from or too close to play 7.Goal-Line Decisions: − Ball In or Out-of-bounds − Goal/No Goal − Corner/Goal Kick − Referee Decision in his/her quadrant

CNRA 10 The closer to the AR the incident occurs, the greater the likelihood for her/his involvement. The higher the temperature of the game, the greater the likelihood for AR involvement.

Beyond the Basics Think back a few moments ago when you were asked to write down examples of when AR should get involved. What did YOU write down?

Have you ever been in... ? Assistant Referee Involvement

CNRA 13 Over-Involvement 1.Inconsistent Foul Assistance 2.Over-Extended Area of Control Calls 4.Foul is near but flag is given late, after whistle

CNRA 14 How to Get Involved: AR Tools 1.Flag 2.Electronic Devices 3.Verbal Communication 4.Non-verbal Communication 5.Physical Presence 6.1-on-1 chats

CNRA 15 If the Referee is unaware or did not have a clear view of an incident due to distance, angle or visual obstruction and needs or asks for help, and... If the AR is 100% sure that an infraction or misconduct has been committed, and feels confident about being able to serve justice and protect the integrity of the game, the... GET INVOLVED!!!... AR should feel and must be empowered to GET INVOLVED!!!

CNRA 16 Summary If the AR does not get involved when needed, he / she would fail the Referee (in particular) 2. Referee Team (as a group) 3. Game (as a whole) And, most likely, impact negatively the outcome of the Game and the overall performance of the Official Team. 17

Conclusion Assistant Referees should approach all games ready to“get involved ”

CNRA 18 Conclusion Referees should Introduce the topic “AR Involvement” in your pre-game instructions. Referee should empower and encourage your ARs to “get involved” when you and/or the game needs them.
