Sound. Sound Waves travel as compressions & expansions Alternating regions of compressed and expanded air These regions move away from source as longitudinal.
Like all waves, sound waves are produced by a vibration.  A tuning fork vibrates to produce a sound.  A guitar string vibrates to produce a sound.

Get Ready for the Pitch

Bill Nye the Science Guy =iv#t=2m06s =iv#t=2m06s

Pitch What do you know about pitch and sound waves? Why do you think pitch is high or low?

Prediction Graph with Rulers Which bottle has the highest pitch? RedYellowGreen High Middle Low

So, GREEN has the highest pitch! Why does the green bottle have the highest pitch?

Let’s try something else! What if we blow air over the top of bottle…? Will the results be the same? Why do you think this?

Prediction Graph with Blowing Which bottle has the highest pitch? RedYellowGreen High Middle Low

So, RED has the highest pitch now! Why does the red bottle have the highest pitch now?

One Final Example Tuning Forks! Using everything we’ve learned, which one will have the higher pitch?

Time to write in your notebooks! PITCH MAKES A SOUND “HIGH” OR “LOW”. IT DEPENDS ON FREQUENCY. OBJECTS WITH LESS MATTER VIBRATE FASTER. FASTER VIBRATION = HIGHER FREQUENCY HIGHER FRQUENCY = HIGHER PITCH OBJECTS CAN VIBRATE, OR THE AIR INSIDE THEM. THIS AFFECTS THE PITCH YOU GET!

Who likes Myth Busters? Here’s something cool! Do NOT try this at home! =1&feature=fvwp =1&feature=fvwp
