Kevin Donovan changed his name into Bambaataa after a trip to Africa. He found inspiration and returned to America determined to turn his gang into a force for good, using the new music to promote peace through the “Universal Zulu nation”. Talking over the songs and scratching records developed while ‘breaking’ had become the dominant style of dance.

In the late 1980s the tone of hip-hop became negative and violent with the arrival on the west coast of ‘gansta rap’ which reflects the gang wars over drugs.
