HISTORY On June 25 th, 1788 Virginia was claimed as the 10 th state. The capitol of Virginia was Richmond. Its nickname was Old Dominion. Virginia was also the first colony in America. In 1865 the Civil War began. Virginia was part of it. When the civil war was over Richmond was in ruins. You can thank Thomas Jefferson for having tomatoes in your salad. Before he bit into one many people believed that they were poisonous. Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains got their name because the trees were blue from a distance.
