Question of the Day Label the heat movement as conduction, convection or radiation. 1.Lava Lamp2.Fire3.Spoon in soup

Thermal Energy on the Move

Thermal energy travels as heat from higher temperature to low temperature. 3 Ways Thermal Energy can move 1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation

1. Conduction- the transfer of energy through matter by direct contact of particles. Ex: Spoon in a pot of boiling water. The heat from the stove heats the pot which heats the water which heats the spoon.

2. Convection- the transfer of energy by the bulk movement of matter. -This happens when fluid particles move from 1 location to another, carrying energy with them. Ex: hot-air balloon

Hot water rises Cooler water sinks Cools at the surface

Radiation- the transfer of energy in the form of waves. -Does not require matter. Ex: Sun-rays -Only radiant energy that is absorbed changes to thermal energy (heat).

There are no particles between the Sun and the Earth. ? RADIATION

Promoting Thermal Energy Conductors- allow heat to move easily through them. Ex: Metals Solids Solids

Reducing Thermal Energy Insulators- do not allow heat to move easily through them. Ex: Wood Plastic Plastic Glass Glass Gas Gas
