Methods of Heat Transfer Definitions Examples Comparison to heat transfer on Earth that effects weather.

RADIATION Heat travels by energy waves EX: Warming by a fireplace or campfire; inside of car in the sun

Examples of Radiation

CONDUCTION Heat travels by direct touch EX: Holding a cup of cocoa; touching a hot stove; holding hands

Example of Conduction The heat of the boiling liquid directly contacts the metal spoon and causes the spoon to transfer the heat to the hand.

CONVECTION Heat travels by a flow of energy Hot air rises, cools, and sinks again EX: Heating a room; heating a pan of water

CONVECTION

Examples of Convection The heated water rises as the cooler water is pushed down. The water that was pushed down is then heated and … then rises pushing the now cooler water down. This causes a current in the water.

How Convection on Earth Looks

Comparison of how energy transfer works.
