1. How does heat from the sun travel to Earth? 2. How does heat from a cup of hot chocolate make the spoon hot? 3. How does heat from a stove top make the entire pan of soup hot?

 Radiation: heat is transferred through empty space.  There is no direct contact between the heat source and an object. Example: Sunlight warming the earth’s surface. Can you think of other examples? NB 47 Draw and label a picture that reminds you of heat transfer by radiation.

 Conduction: When heat is transferred by direct contact.  The heat is transferred when you touch it! Example: you touch a hot pan and get burned Can you think of other examples? NB 47 Draw and label a picture that reminds you of heat transfer by conduction.

 Convection: the transfer of heat by the movement of a heated fluid or gas  As the fluid or gas heats, the molecules spread out and become less dense. Then they move upwards, over the cooler fluid. Then as it cools, it becomes more dense and sinks. Example: heating a pot of soup Can you think of other examples? NB 47 Draw and label a picture that reminds you of convection.

 convection.htm convection.htm  These currents are the forces that drive plate tectonics.  Act it out (quietly): The floor is the hot outer core of the Earth. You are hot rock in the mantle. Hot rock rises because it is less dense, then it cools and becomes more dense, and then it sinks.

 The cycle of heating, cooling, and sinking repeats over and over and over and over and over and over.  This causes convection currents. The heat from the core causes convection currents in the mantle.  Isn’t that neat!!!
