Christopher Columbus In 1492 Christopher Columbo arrived in the New World He thought he had come to India and called the people who lived there ´Indians´

Thanksgiving In 1620 a group of English settlers arrived ina America on a ship called The Mayflower. They survived their first winter thanks to the local Indians. Americans celebrate that first successful Harvest every November with a special Thanksgiving dinner

The Civil War During the 17th and 18th century,the rich landowners who grew cotton,tobacco and rice brought over 6 milion men,women and children from West Africa. They all became slaves and worked hard on the farms in the South. Slavery was the cause of the Civil War between the South and the North, fought from 1860 to 1865.

Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincon was against slavery. He believed that ´all men were born Equal´ The North won the war and slavery ended.

Gorge Washington On July 4th,1776, the Americans made a Declaration of Independence from Britain. After that they fought a war that lasted six years. George Washington commanded their army. In 1789 he became the USA´s first president. America´s capital is named after him.

Sitting Bull Sitting Bull was a Cheif of the Sioux tribe. He fought against the settlers because he wanted to keep his way of life. The Sioux won the Battle of Little Big Horn and kept their land. The last big battle of the ´Indians Wars´ was fought at Wounded Knee.

Inventions and events In 1893 Henry Ford built his first car. In 1927 Charles Lindberg flew across the Atlantic. Between 1943 and 1945 Robert Oppenheimer and his team developed the´ world´s first bomb. In the ´50s and ´60s Martin Luther King fought for the rights of black people.He won the Nobel Prize. Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon in 1969.
