Jousting Bear Baiting Cock FightingHunting Other SportsIndoor Games Worksheets

Jousting Knights jousted against each other and were watched by large audiences. They wore heavy armour to protect themselves.

Bear-Baiting One of the most popular was bear baiting. A bear was tied by its legs to a post using a long chain and fierce dogs were sent on it. The dogs tried to tear out the bear’s throat while the bear tried to defend itself. The bear and dogs fought until the dogs were killed or the bear was fatally injured.

Cock-Fighting Another cruel sport was cock-fighting. Two trained fighting cocks fought each other until one was killed or too injured to fight any longer.

Hunting Hunting was another popular royal sport. It took place throughout the year except during the harsh winter months.

Other Sports Other popular sports included archery, golf, wrestling, fencing, tennis and bowls. They also played “fotebal” which was like football today but played with a pig’s bladder instead of a ball!

Indoor Games Rich people played many games. They enjoyed playing chess, cards and dice games. They also enjoyed dancing.
