Violence against women can take many forms: physical, emotional, economic, social and political. All these forms of violence cause terrible suffering and keep millions of women from fulfilling their full human potential. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Match the English words to the Hebrew translation Match the English words to the Hebrew translation violence – physical – emotional – economic – social – political – to cause – fulfill – potential – יכולת פיזי, גופני לגרום כלכלי למלא פוליטי, מדיני רגשי חברתי אלימות

In some countries, a husband holds all the rights to his wife’s property. That even includes the wages she earns.

“When a woman marries, her civil rights cease.”

Does she have the right to vote? to be elected to government? to own property? to basic freedom? “When a woman marries, her civil rights cease.”

“He has taken away from her the right to be a responsible member of society.”

Would you say the following are responsible, social beings? Babies The mentally sick Criminals Teenagers Animals

1. Who takes away her property rights? 2. Who takes away the wages she earns? 3. In what way does she become “irresponsible”? Answer the questions according to what you have learned so far. In some countries, when a woman marries:

The status of a married woman who does not have any rights is like: A queen A business woman A baby A slave A worker A tool Choose two options and explain your choice.

Did women ever fight for their rights? Yes, they did. Since the 18th century women have fought for their rights in countries such as the United States and England, and after that in other countries, too. Women who fought for the right to vote were called “Suffragettes” because the word “suffrage” means “right to vote”.

Women fought in many ways for their human rights. They made demonstrations, wrote letters to the Congress and Parliament, wrote books, went to Court, published articles and announcements in the press.

New Zealand (1893) Soviet Union (1917) United Kingdom (1918) Canada (1918) Germany, Poland, and Sweden (1919) USA (1920) South Africa (1930) France (1944) Italy (1946) Switzerland (1971) List of countries where women obtained civil rights and in what year

By the 1980's, except for a few Muslim countries, women could vote everywhere in the world.

Even though most women were given their civil rights, do you think they really have their full rights today and are equal to men?

In most countries, even today women still do not have full rights. Women are still discriminated against in many areas: They are not paid as much as men, even when they are doing the same job. There are less women in higher positions than men.

In many countries women are not allowed to own property. They are the victims of physical violence.

In order to change women’s status in the world, women are still struggling for their human rights.

Although the struggle for equal rights between men and women is still going on, the status of women in many countries of the world is improving. One of the most effective ways to change injustice is to show the younger generation the proper way to live according to the laws of equal human rights without any discrimination.
