Homosexuality was illegal and gay bars were often raided

The Stonewall Inn was a hot spot of activity

In 1969 police raided the bar for selling liquor without a license

In addition to employees there were 3 drag queens and a lesbian arrested

Fed up and angry the people fought back

Fed up and angry the people fought back

The protest spilled over into the neighboring street

The riot lasted for days and began the gay rights movement

Today the event is regarded as the first major protest on behalf of equal rights
