A VILLAGE IN ITALY Today, Italy is a country in Europe The country was shape like a boot The boot sticks out in to the Mediterranean sea Rome is next to the Tiber river. In 700 B.C, Greece was becoming a powerful country. Rome, however was just a small group of mud nut with straw roofs. There were seven hills were dotted with small village. The village grew and grew, soon they were all part of one big city, that a city of seven hills was called Etruscans took over Rome.

A powerful roman general Even with these problems at home, the Romans tried to take over more and more land They sent generals out to distant lands Each general had his own army One general, named Julius Caesar, had taken over a land called Gaul He had many followers The Roman government thought he might be too powerful

Some Jews believed he was the messenger sent by god, they called him Christ. The followers of Jesus became known as Christians.

The Christians gain followers After jesus died, people carried his teaching across the Roman Empire. many Jews and people of other religions became Christians. Sometimes the Romans thought the Christians kept too much to themselves, also they did not worship the gods. Then in A.D, 307, a man named Constantine became the emperor of Rome, one night he dreamed that he saw across in the sky Otto thought it was the cross of Christ, he dreamed that if he carried that across into battle, he would win.

The fall of Rome Historians say that the Roman empire fell in the year A.D 476. By “fell” they mean that Romans last their power in the world, but actually Rome didn’t fall in one year. The problem began many years earlier. People from the north began attacking Rome, the Romans had to make their army much bigger to protect themselves. lots of people were out of work, the empire grew weaker and weaker. Finally, it gave into the attackers from the north.

Roman ideas Today The Romans gave lots of ideas to the world before they fell from power. They were great builders. They built bridges, Stadiums and aqueducts Aqueducts carry water from the mountains to the city. The Romans built roads that are still in use today. The Romans were also good at making laws. Many of our ideas about laws came from the Romans.
