First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) First major land battle of the Civil War. First battle where troops were rushed to the battle by train. Battle in which “Stonewall” Jackson received his nick name. Many civilians from Washington D.C. came out to watch the battle and made a picnic of it. Confederate victory

This battle assisted the union in gaining control over New Orleans and was able to take control of most of lower Mississippi. The Battle of Chickamauga Union was working towards capturing Chattanooga, TN. There was a large Railroad hub in Chattanooga. If the union gained control of this railroad they would have access to the railroads in the part of the country and would be able to transport troops and supplies to the south. Later will lead to the Battle of Chattanooga. Large amount of casualties. Confederate Victory

The Battle of the Wilderness This battle was fought in the woods of Virginia. Fought more man on man than strategic maneuvers because of the venue of the battle. Inconclusive victory, both had to retreat.

Siege of Petersburg June 9, 1864 to March 25, 1865 Union- Ulysses S. Grant ▫67,000–125,000 troops ▫42,000 casualties, wounded, captured or missing Confederacy- Robert E. Lee ▫ 52,000 troops ▫28,000 casualties, wounded, captured or missing

Siege of Petersburg Lasted almost 10 month campaign. Petersburg was a major supply hub to the confederate army led. Grant and his men were on the road to capturing Richmond (CSA capital) which they had tried several times. Union victory
