25.2 Imperialism in Southeast Asia and the Pacific

Europeans Colonize Southeast Asia What Western powers were the most prominent colonizers of Southeast Asia in the 1800s? The Dutch, British, and French. Where were the Dutch East Indies? Island of Java, The Moluccas, and Modern Day Indonesia. Where did the British expand to? Burma, Malaya, and Singapore.

Europeans Colonize Southeast Asia Where was Indochina and who was colonizing it? Modern day Vietnam, the French. How did the Vietnamese respond? They fought fiercely but were overpowered by French technology (1860s). The French eventually claimed Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. What do you think the resentment of French occupation may lead to?

Europeans Colonize Southeast Asia Was all of Southeast Asia colonized? No, Siam avoided colonization. How? The king of Siam, Mongkut, studied foreign languages, modern science and math, foreign tactics and used his knowledge to negotiate with the West. Modernized and worked with the West.

Europeans Colonize Southeast Asia Why did many Chinese people migrate to Southeast Asia during this time period? China was in turmoil, there were many new economic opportunities available. Who did the new Western technology benefit the most? Colonists. Why do you think that is?

The United States and the Philippines Why did the Filipino people begin to revolt against the Spanish colonists? The Catholic Church gained wealth and power, the people felt the Church abused its position. What was the Spanish-American War (1898) about and what was the result? The Untied States wanted to help free Cuba from Spanish rule. U.S. Battleships destroyed the Spanish fleet in the Philippines. American naval officers encouraged rebellion among Filipino people and they fought against Spanish.

The United States and the Philippines What did the Filipino rebels expect from the Americans in return for fighting against Spain and what happened? That America would support its independence. Instead America gave Spain $20 million for the Philippines and made the Philippines their colony. Filipinos fought against the Americans from 1899-1901. Thousands of Americans died but hundreds of thousands of Filipinos died. America crushed the rebellion.

Western Powers Seize the Pacific Islands In the late 1800s the U.S., French, and British became politically involved in the Pacific Islands (Samoa, Polynesia, etc.). They secured unequal treaties much like they did in China. American sugar growers were in Hawaii: pressed for more power Hawaii resisted but was overpowered. United States annexed Hawaii Annexed: the forcible acquisition of a state's territory by another state.

The Effects of Imperialism Read page 794 and answer the following questions using evidence in your answer: How is migrating to find work a cultural as well as an economic effect of imperialism? How might grouping several rival ethnic groups into one political unit cause friction when that region gains independence?
