Rhetorical Question: Got Milk? A rhetorical question is one in which the answer is so obvious it is not required. The idea here is not to receive an answer, merely to reinforce a point.

Hyperbole: “Adds amazing luster for infinite, mirror-like shine” (Brilliant Brunette shampoo) A writer may describe a situation in forceful, overblown language in order to make the issue seem more important or urgent than it may otherwise be considered.

Emotional Appeal A person is made to have strong feelings about a situation or product

Expert opinion: “Four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum” Experts approve this product, so you should use it

Testimonial A well-known person supports a product or service

Bandwagon A statement suggesting that everyone is using a specific product, so you should too

Scare Tactic: Uses language or pictures to frighten the viewer May state that something bad will happen

Compare/Contrast Two items are compared to convince that one is better than the other.

Transfer/Diction Contains a feeling or idea from words or pictures that transfers an emotional response to the viewer response viewer
