Cold War The Cold War is the name given to the relationship that developed primarily between the USA and the USSR after World War Two. The Cold War was to dominate international affairs for decades and many major crises occurred - the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Hungary and the Berlin Wall being just some. For many the growth in weapons of mass destruction was the most worrying issue.

So why were these two super powers so distrustful of the other? AMERICA SOVIET UNION Free electionsNo election or fixed DemocraticAutocratic/dictatorship CapitalistCommunist Survival of the fittestEveryone helps everyone Richest world powerPoor economic base

Being that America was afraid of the influence of the soviet union within the country, It eventually led to the start of McCarthyism.

McCarthyism McCarthyism is the name for the era when Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin began investigating rumors of communists working in government positions in order to promote himself in his career. Obviously the 50's were big for communist scares, so McCarthy's investigation caught fire. Eventually, his investigation spread well beyond communists in the government. Due to McCarthy being able to literally ruin careers simply by accusing someone of communism, some people began reporting others as communists simply to get McCarthy's spotlight off them!

The Red Scare The Red Scare was the widespread fear of communism throughout the United States as a result of the McCarthyism movement. People were so scared of communists over throwing the government that they easily believed the accusations that were being made of people being communsists.

Red Scare continued The Red Scare can be related to the movie The Crucible. The Crucible is a movie that takes place in the 1690’s in a town that is very strict about religion, but after a few of the town’s girls are discovered in the woods dancing are accused of witch craft, soon the whole town is overrun with accusations of witchcraft. Although most people think this movie is based on the Salem Witch Trials, it is actually a representation of the McCarthyism movement that took place in the mid 1900’s. This is because people were being wrongfully accused of being communists during the McCarthyism movement like people were being wrongfully accused of being witches in “The Crucible.”

Downfall Eventually came the downfall of Joe McCarthy. Soon people realized that he had little to no proof of his accusations. The media was showing this and discussing his harsh tactics. The senate censured him because of his vulgarity and he lost almost all of his power. After his harsh downfall Joseph McCarthy ended up dying from Hepatitis on May 2 nd, 1957.
