North or South: Who Killed Reconstruction? Document A

The KKK are trying to keep Northerners from coming to the South. FACTS The KKK are targeting carpetbaggers, republicans and people associated with the military. INFERENCES The KKK are trying to keep Northerners from coming to the South. ARGUMENTS The South is responsible because the KKK is running rampant around the South and intimidating Northerners.

The KKK are killing people in very public places (courthouses). The KKK are trying to scare and intimidate Northerners and their supporters. The KKK (a Southern institution) is using terrorist tactics to scare Northerners from instituting Reconstru-ction policies.

Main Idea: The author wrote the document to warn others about the KKK, their actions, who they were targeting and who was next.

The South is responsible because the KKK is intimidating Republicans. Colby was attacked by the KKK because he voted Republican and he did not accept a bribe to give up his office. The goal of the KKK is to get control of the government by any means necessary. The South is responsible because the KKK is intimidating Republicans.

The KKK was made up of “first-class men in our town.” The KKK had money and power in Southern towns. The South because the KKK wants to gain political power by intimidating Republicans and their supporters.

Main idea: To inform the reader how intimidation was used by the KKK.

The North does not care about the problems that the South has. The North is indifferent (does not care) about the actions of the KKK in the South. The North does not care about the problems that the South has. The North is giving up on trying to fix the South.

The North is focused on national concerns (Panic of 1873) instead of violence in the South. The North feels that the bad economy and political corruption is more important than the violence in the South. The North believes that the violence of the KKK is a “Southern problem,” not a national problem.

The North is giving up on the South and believed that the KKK was a problem for the South to fix.
