TEMPLE OF ATHENA NIKE
The temple sat on a high outcrop of rock
BASIC FACTS built from 427 to 424. architect was Kallikrates. material was Pentelic marble. temple built in the Ionic style. inside the temple was a statue of Nike. Nike was the goddess of victory.
The temple housed a statue of a wingless Nike In her RIGHT HAND she holds the helmet of Athena of War In her LEFT HAND the Nike holds a pomegranate
The wings of the Nike were clipped in the hope that it would compel the goddess to remain in Athens.
The cella was very small (5m x 5m) and almost square. At both ends were four Ionic columns. The front wall had a central opening which formed the entrance. On either side were two other openings that were covered with bronze lattices.
TEMPLE DECORATION the temple was decorated with a 45cm high frieze. the frieze ran around the entire exterior. it was sculpted in high relief. the east frieze showed a scene involving the gods. the remaining 3 sides showed scenes of battles.
And finally… Surrounding the temple was a low wall (or parapet) which was decorated with sculptures of winged Nike figures.
