Goddesses and More Gods Why do the male gods need women ? To know the stories of Durga and Kali To explain why goddesses are worshipped To reflect on whether God is one or many in Hinduism HW 1.Create a family tree from the sheet, (cut up the gods, stick them in your books in their family trees, and label them).

Hindu goddesses have awesome creative strength and power, to complete the men gods, but they also have their own jobs to do… Scarier! Durga Kali Parvati 1.Explain why the male gods need women. 2.Look at the pictures of Durga and Kali. Choose one. Explain what you think she is like and why. Without women, the Trimurti gods haven’t got any creative power to do anything. The “female” completes the male gods and makes them powerful.

A demon had been rewarded by the God Brahma that every time a drop of his blood was shed, it would create a more powerful version of the demon. Soon the world was overrun by this demon & his clones. The gods asked Parvati, Shiva’s consort for help. She transformed herself into the warrior goddess Kali. She ordered the gods to continue fighting while she put out her tongue and caught all the demons’ blood on her tongue, so it would not fall to the ground. This allowed the demon and his clones to be cut down and finally killed. However, after the demon was slain, Kali was drunk with blood and continued killing. No –one could stop her. Finally, the gods begged Shiva and he laid himself under her feet. When she saw her husband under her feet, Kali finally came to her senses and stopped her killing. Kali is worshipped because she is fearless. She is not deceived by any illusions or tricks, and has knowledge : she knew where his blood would fall, to catch it. She is scary, because she is ruthless in her fight against evil and illusion. People often like illusions and lies, and Kali threatens them that all evil and lies must be abandoned. 1.Summarise the key points from the story in your own words. 2.Explain why people would worship this goddess. 3. Draw the goddess.

DURG A A demon had been rewarded by the God Brahma he could never be killed by any man or god. So he started a reign of terror. He drove the gods out of heaven. This unbalanced the forces of good and evil in the world. The gods were furious at the demon, for his violence. In their anger, they hurled bolts of light at the demon. These lightning bolts fused to create the beautiful goddess Durga. Each god gave her a weapon, and Durga rode out on a lion. She wasable to defeat the demon, because although he could not be killed by any man, he could be killed by a woman. The Goddess Durga is worshipped as a protector over right order in the world, and for her strength and compassion. 1.How is this story similar or different from the story of Kali? 2.Draw the picture of Durga. 3.Label your picture with key points from what happened in the story.

What can you remember about of these goddesses?

Freeze Frame ! Think of a way to do a freeze frame for each of the 2 stories – present, and see if others can guess !

Other gods/ goddesses The holy books of Hinduism have many other stories about different gods. The sun & 9 planet gods, move the planets and affect human destiny (astrology) The weather gods (rain, thunder, wind) The gods of home and community Agni – the god of fire and sacrifices Mitra – the god of friendship Aryaman - the god of family honour Remember! All Hindu “gods” are just different roles and different representations of BRAHMAN... 1.Draw one god from each of these 3 categories of gods. *There are 330 major gods in Hinduism, with hundreds more minor ones. How many have you met so far ? Make a list ! (add the gods from this slide)

You alone are our mother and father You alone are our sibling and friend You alone are our knowledge and prosperity You alone are everything to us My Lord, my lord. Whatever god Hindus are worshipping, they will always finish with this prayer, showing they worship only ONE God:
