ISDH Universal Precautions Lead equipment should not be used for other tests. All lead equipment should be kept in a dust-proof container. Try to avoid touching equipment when transferring it into the dust-proof container. Use powder free gloves (or be sure to rid gloves from any powder). Wash hands before and after procedure!

ISDH Supplies Good to Have Table cover Band Aid, cotton ball, or 2x2 gauze Clean surfaces – Lysol, Clorox, etc Clean up packet not necessary
ISDH Steps Clean work area – cover if possible Supplies available – remove cap from microvette tube Gloves Clean clients finger – can reuse cotton Stick – side of finger pad– press firmly Lancet in sharps container Collect blood in tube and cap – place in safe area Stop bleeding – if any Clean area
ISDH Safety Concerns If you have an accidental stick with the used lancet – follow employer’s policy. You have only a few hours to get medication into your mouth. Transport and dispose of sharps container according to employer’s policy.
