ROOT WORDS WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT!

A tree can’t stand alone without roots. A word CANNOT stand alone without a word root or base word.

A BASE WORD CAN STAND ALONE. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ROOT AND A BASE.

A WORD ROOT IS PART OF A WORD THAT CONTAINS ITS BASIC MEANING. Am Amor Love, Liking, Friendliness =

BENE = GOOD, WELL Benefits means to aid in the well being of someone/something. Benefactor means someone who helps someone else. Beneficient means to do good.

MAL = EVIL, ILL, BAD, BADLY Mal-adroit means to be clumsy or awkward. Mal- ady means sickness. Mal-content means rebellious and bad tempered.

FLU, FLUC, FLUX = FLOW Effluence means the process of flowing out. Refluxes means a backward flow of body fluid. Fluctuations means continual change. Influxes means to flow in.

You’ve heard of a “herd of Zombies”, but have you heard of the root GREG? Greg = Gather, Flock Gregarious means living with and moving with the herd. Aggregation means to collect in a living mass. Congregate means to flock together.

LITERATURE AND ALLITERATION Litera= letter Alliteration means recurrence of the same letter sound. Literature means the best works written over the centuries. Obliteration means to erase the letters. You’ve been using these words already this year.

Have you ever felt this way? Then you could be thinking of words with the root: Sol, soli Solemn means serious or thoughtfully. Solace means comfort during times of disappointment. Soli means an act you are doing on your own without assistance. Solitude means a state in being alone.

WE USE THESE EVERYDAY FOR THIS ROOT. Vid, Vis See, Look, Sight Visible means relating to vision. Evident means to be easily seen. Vista means a view from a distance.
