3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 Requirements and lessons from the open archives service providers Report back

3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 Implementations About 20/25 people in group 5/6 have implemented a service Rest were thinking about it

3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 What do services need? A registry of data providers? Appropriate quality metadata

3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 A Registry of DPs Varying opinions – Yes! One is needed Central Registry Community based registries – No! DPs should and will make themselves known to highly visable services Peer to Peer – friends

3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 Quality of Metadata Valid XML Format of content Shared tools – open source / Web services Not empty fields If a service provider builds funtionality based on an assumption about metadata, what happens when the assumption fails?

3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 Final thoughts Need to think about what services users require before validating the OAI-PMH? SPs should be telling DPs what they want… but: This raises the adoption barrier One solution is to build good services that rely on (and will only use) good quality metadata DPs will want to part of those services and improve their data

3nd Open Archives Forum Workshop – Berlin, 27th-29th March 2003 Some questions What do services need? Is the OAI-MPH able to satisfy these needs? Can we built automatic tools that respond to some of these needs?
