Jonah 3:1-10

Revision Book of Jonah is an historical account written approx 800 years before Jesus Jonah is recorded as a prophet to the nation of Israel in 2 Kings 14:25 Jesus himself refers to Jonah as an historical prophet in Matthew 12 & 16 and in Luke 11

Revision Chapter 1 – Jonah is called by God to go to Nineveh Modern day Nineveh would be in Mosul (Iraq) God pursues him as he runs Chapter 2 - Jonah sinks to the very bottom of the sea where the roots of the mountains find their origin

Part Three - Jonah 3:1-10The Mission of God Jonah 3:1-2 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” Observation 1 The Mission of God is carried out by the Messengers of God Not only does God pursue us but he is also pursuing the City Wyndham

Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days.” Observation 1 The Mission of God is carried out by the Messengers of God Not only does God pursue us but he is also pursuing the City Wyndham Nineveh is about 900km from the coast

Observation 2 Are you waiting to get fixed or are you journeying with God knowing that in your “going” you will be transformed The Gospel of John Chapter 5 The Hebrew for “overturned” = [haw-vak'] 1Corinthians 1:27 “But God chose the foolish things of this world to put the wise to shame. He chose the weak things of this world to put the powerful to shame.” (CEV) 1. tumble - retire - sack - disconnect 2. change – transform - convert God is a master and skilful worker

Part Three - Jonah 3:1-10The Mission of God Jonah 3:5-6 “The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.” Observation 3 The truthfulness of the Word of God does not rest in the messenger but in the message itself Dust is a symbol of origin

But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.”

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.” Observation 5 Do you have a sense of urgency? vs.8 “Let everyone call urgently on God” Jude 1: “Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.”
