Fulfilling His Mission

 In the Old Testament, Jehovah is repeatedly portrayed as a Shepherd (Psa. 23:1-3; Isa. 40:10- 11; Ezek. 34:11-16).  Similar language is used in foreshadowing the coming Messiah (Ezek. 34:23-26; Mic. 5:2-4; Zech. 13:7).  Jesus is described as “the Good Shepherd” (John 10:14), “the Great Shepherd” (Heb. 13:20), and “the Chief Shepherd” (1 Pet. 5:4) who provides for the needs of His flock (Rev. 7:16-17).

 Jesus demonstrated courage in warning against false prophets and false Christs (Matt. 7:15-20; 24:11, 24-26).  He demonstrated courage in declaring the dangers of unauthorized additions/subtractions (Matt. 15:1-19).  He demonstrated courage in pronouncing woes against hypocritical and self-serving religious leaders (Matt. 23).

 Jesus demonstrated courage in reaching across cultural boundaries to the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5-38; 10:14-16; Matt. 15:21-28; 9:10-13).  He also demonstrated courage in reaching across spiritual boundaries to disciples, like Peter, who repeatedly stumbled and fell (Matt. 26:30-35, 69-75; John 21:1-17).

 The courage of Jesus Christ, who gave his life as a ransom for many, was foreshadowed in prophecy (Isa. 53:1-12), and realized when he freely went to the Cross (Matt. 26:36-56).

 Jesus demonstrated courage on our behalf (1 Pet. 2:21-25).  Will we manifest courage on His behalf (Matt. 10:32-39)?
