MAKING AN INSECT COLLECTION HOW DO I COLLECT INSECTS? WHERE DO I FIND INSECTS?

AN INSECT COLLECTION

COLLECTING INSECTS BY HAND BLACKLIGHT TRAP/BACKPORCH LIGHT WITH A NET –SWEEPING –AERIAL

HAND COLLECTION SAFETY: DO NOT PICK-UP ANY INSECT UNLESS YOU ARE SURE IT IS NOT DANGEROUS. USE THE JAR AND SOMETHING TO GET THE INSECT TO GO INTO JAR. Hand collecting Insects are found in a variety of places where the use of a net is not possible - under logs or stones or loose bark. Here collecting is done by hand

HAND COLLECTING

BLACKLIGHT COLLECTING

INSECT NETTING Using a sweep net is done by sweeping the net back and forth rapidly in the grass or running while pulling the net through the grass. When done, hold the net away from you to allow any bees to fly out. Then shake the insects down to the bottom of the net by beating on the sides.. Grab the net about 2 inches from the bottom, turn the net inside out, and push the bottom of it into the jar to release the insects. Before adding more bugs to a jar that has specimens, tap on the lid to knock the bugs to the bottom

NETTING INSECTS

FINDING INSECTS WHERE DO I LOOK? –UNDER ROCKS/LOGS (SAFETY: BEWARE LIFT ROCKS AND LOGS WITH THEM BETWEEN YOU AND THE OPEN SIDE!!) –AROUND LIGHTS –GRASS AND WEEDS –ON FLOWERS –IN/ON DEAD ANIMALS (DON’T JUST KILL ONE) –BREAK OPEN DEAD LOGS

PLACES TO FIND INSECTS!
