Presentation transcript:

Objective: SWBAT explain how the time of death can be estimated using insect evidence by examining the developmental stages of the blowfly and calculating the specific PMI (Post Mortem Intervals) since initial deposition Do Now: To prove that we are responsible enough to use more smart devices to do activities in class, we will post appropriate comments only and our phones will be out of sight when the timer goes off 1.Pull out your smart device. Go to TodaysMeet.com/hinton If you do not have a smart phone with you today. Skip to #4 and answer this in your notebooks. 2.Put your initials and your name (ex. SNH ) 3.Click JOIN 4.ANSWER THIS QUESTION in the message box : So far we have talked about manners, mechanisms, causes and stages of/after death. Of the above, What are you the most comfortable with and what do you need more help on? 5.Press SAY when you are finished typing 6. FIRST BLOCK ONLY: For the things you are most comfortable with, what helped you learn that information as well as you know it (ex. Group work, Review, Hands on practice) When the timer goes off all phones should be out of sight

Time of Death Insects can provide details about the time of death Insects are useful in a crime scene -> forensic Entomology Within minutes of death certain insects arrive to lay their eggs on the warm body Different insects will arrive during different stages of decomposition ACTIVITY

Collecting insect evidence on and around the corpse can give the entomologist and investigators an estimation time of death

If a corpse contains blowfly eggs, then the approximate TOD is….. If a corpse contains third-stage larvae, then the TOD is approximately 4 to 5 days

Exit Ticket 1. What stage is this corpse in? What characteristics do you see that support your answer? 2. Why/How can Insects be used to calculate the time of death? Give an example.
