The Centipedes are found in agriculture fields, under bricks in old and abandoned brick kilns, in termite mounds under rotten logs and in old farm naures. Centipedes are also found in tropical climates.
Centipedes are fast-moving, venomous, predatory.This type of insect has a long body and has lots of jointed legs. Their name ‘centipede’ means '100 legs. This does not mean centipedes have 100 legs. Centipedes are invertebrates meaning 'without a backbone or spinal column'. A common centipede is the house centipede which is about 5 centimetres long and has 15 pairs of legs. Some centipedes glow in the dark like the Geophilus electricus.
About 20 families and 3,000 species of centipedes have been discovered worldwide. Centipedes are hunted by various other animals such as birds, toads and shrews as well as humans, if they are accidentally trodden on. Centipede colours vary from pale yellow to deep brown. Their bodies are always flattened. Although centipedes are covered with a tough outer coat, they don’t have a waterproof layer and they like to stay in moist areas where there is no danger of the ground drying up.
