Mapmaker and Explorer Journal Entry You will either be a mapmaker or an Explorer for this journal entry. Which ever one you choose to write, from that perspective, you will need to use information from section 1 of chapter 12. The year is 1445 A.D. and the weather is just right for a new expedition to a new, undiscovered land. You are in port at an Italian coastline and you either are a mapmaker, expedition coordinator, or an actual explorer and you need to talk about what your plans are for your map or your actual expedition. Be specific and creative while using actual details for your journal entry.

Early Voyages of Discovery Portugal Leads the Way Prince Henry became known as “Henry the Navigator” He never actually made an ocean voyage 1420- Henry’s adventurers sailed along the coast of Africa and mapped it out Eventually traded Gold with Western African Kingdoms Azores, Madiera, and Cape Verde 1488- Bartolomeu Dias – sailed southern tip of Africa 1497- Vasco da Gama – Rounded southern tip of Africa and landed on India’s southwest coast Opened up a way for the Europeans to reach Asia by way of water

First Voyage of Columbus Bold plan to reach Asia West across the Atlantic Ocean 1492- Sailed the Ocean Blue, paid for by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain San Salvador- an island in the Caribbean Cuba and Hispaniola Hispaniola is present day Haiti and Domincan Republic Began trading with the Taino people Amerigo Vespucci- made map of South America and eventually his name was applied to South America and North America

Spanish Conquerors Columbus’ success pleased Spanish Monarchs Eager investors wanted a part of the new exploration ideas Conquistadors invaded Hispaniola Taino people had never seen men in armor or horses Extremely frightened 1494- Treaty of Tordesilles, Spain and Portugal signed this to separate and divide South America

Voyage of Magellan 1518- Spain hired Ferdinand Magellan Primary goal was to said around the Americas and then arrive in Asia Strait of Magellan- Southern tip of South America Once he passed through the stormy strait he sailed on a very peaceful sea and he named it the “Pacific Ocean” On his voyage, his crew ran out of food Ate Leather, Sawdust, and Rats Horrible sanitation conditions and many men came down with various diseases Magellan and his crew reached present day Philippines, and Magellan was killed by the natives

Early French and English Explorers 1497- Englishman John Cabot (Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in present day Canada) 1524- Frenchman Giovanni da Verrazano (Explored much of the eastern coast of North America and mapped it out, but did not reach Asia like he set out to accomplish) 1534- Frenchman Jacques Cartier (sailed inland along the St. Lawrence river into present day Montreal, Canada. Also claimed much of Eastern Canada for France) France and England began setting up colonies in North America

History Hubs Hub 1.) Define Vocabulary in Chapter 12, Section 1 and use those words in one different sentence for each term, to show the meaning of that term. Hub 2.) Technology- List all the technology mentioned in section 1. Tell how that technology affected exploration. Hub 3.) Answer 1 and 2 on your paper, and copy down the map on p. 324 on the top of the page. Hub 4.) List the parts of the ship on p. 325, and explain how these parts of the ship benefited the explorers. Answer 1 and 2 on page 325. Hub 5.) Compare the Conquistadors and Taino people and how they probably viewed one another. Differences and similarities should be discussed. Hub 6.) In a chart with 3 columns, compare the similarities and differences of an explorer from Spain and Portugal, France, and English. 4 facts of each should be in your chart.

Conclusion Be prepared for an essay and a quiz on Friday over Chapter 12, Section 1. The essay will be over comparing explorers from the different regions and the way they viewed exploring differently. Quiz will be over the content and notes taken from section 1 of Chapter 12.
