About our speaker.... LtCol Gary L. Maddux Jr., “Marine Presidential Helicopter Squadron One: Past, Present, and Future” AHS Dinner Meeting, April 17, 2007 Lieutenant Colonel Maddux was born 4 September 1967 in Fort Hood, TX. He graduated from Spring High School in Spring, TX in In December 1990, upon Graduation from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After graduating The Basic School in June of 1991, LtCol Maddux attended flight training at Pensacola, Florida. In May of 1993 he was winged and designated a Naval Aviator. Upon completion of flight school LtCol Maddux reported to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron (HMT) 302 at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), Tustin, in Orange County, California for training in the CH-53E helicopter. From 1993 to 1996, he was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 466, MCAS Tustin where he held the billets of Ground Training Officer, Assistant Quality Assurance Officer, Avionics Officer, and Flight Officer. During this tour he participated in two Squadron Unit Deployment Programs to Okinawa, Japan. One of these included a tour with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM) 266 as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Special Operations Capable (SOC) where he served as the CH-53E NATOPS Officer. In Aug of 1997 LtCol Maddux was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California and served as a Forward Air Controller and the Headquarters and Service Company Commander. In December of 1997 he was assigned to HMT-302 at MCAS New River, Jacksonville, NC for duty as a CH-53E flight instructor. While assigned to HMT-302 he was designated a Night Systems Instructor and a Division Leader while serving as the Logistics Officer, Future Operations Officer, and the NATOPS Officer/CH-53E Program Manager. In April of 2000 LtCol Maddux was assigned to HMH-461 at MCAS New River where he held the billet of Logistics Officer. He was designated an Air Mission Commander and assigned in August of 2001 as the Detachment Officer in Charge to HMM-261 as part of the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) for the 22nd MEU (SOC) where LtCol Maddux served as the Director of Safety and Standardization. During this deployment the 22 MEU(SOC) participated in Operation Enduring Freedom in the Horn of Africa region. From September of 2002 to June of 2003, LtCol Maddux was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26 Headquarters where he served as the Group Training Officer and Inspection Coordinator. From June 2003 to June 2004, LtCol Maddux attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia earning a Masters Degree in Military Studies. LtCol Maddux reported to Marine Helicopter Squadron One at Marine Corps Airfield Quantico, Virginia in June of 2003 and is qualified as an Aircraft Commander in the CH-53E, VH-3D, and VH-60 helicopters. During this tour he was also designated as an Aircraft Commander for Marine Two. He is currently the Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the USMC Aircraft Maintenance Department. LtCol Maddux has been married for 17 years to the former Nancy Nason of Houston, Texas and they have four children, Tiana (14), Kaylee (12), Madison (10) and Garrett (8). His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a gold star.
