Presentation transcript:

Following are two samples of classroom practice. The Foundation Statements and the Early Stage 1 outcome for designing and making place an emphasis on students:  generating their own ideas and designs  exploring ideas, manipulating materials and trialling designs through play  safely using some equipment and computer-based technology. Students designing in Early Stage 1 Science and Technology At Early Stage 1, students talk about their own ideas and their own likes and dislikes. They tell how their ideas for products and places might help people. Students should be encouraged to use their imagination when drawing and modelling design ideas.

Sample Task A: Design and make a helicopter

Task: Designing and producing helicopters Early Stage 1 Task A; Design and make a helicopter talking needs generating design ideas Students talked about helicopters and how they are used to rescue people.

Early Stage 1 Task A: Design and make a helicopter (cont.) producing solutions evaluating solutions producing solutions We talked about our helicopters and how we could improve our designs. Some students wanted to make more realistic models with curves and glass.

Sample Task B: Design and make a boat that sails

Early Stage 1 Task B: Design and make a boat that sails researching uses design ideas

design solution producing solutions Early Stage 1 Task B: Design and make a boat that sails (cont.) design solution evaluating solutions We set up a pool and sailed our boats to see which ones worked well.
