Higher Education in Manufacturing Dr. Jose Macedo Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, CA February 2012

Outline Engineering Skills for the Future Manufacturing Engineering Cal Poly Manufacturing Engineering Program

What is Engineering? All engineers have the skills to solve “new” problems. Engineers need to be able to solve problems they have never solved before.

Airplane

What will these items look 100 years from now? 2012 Today years in the future ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

How can we teach how to design the products and processes of the future, when nobody knows what they will be? 2011 now the future ? ? ? College education Engineering career

Engineering Skills Engineers need to be able to: -solve problems they have never solved before. -continue learning throughout their careers. -innovate & create the products of the future.

Manufacturing Engineering

The Challenge for US Manufacturing Misperception by the general public that manufacturing in the US is in decline. Not enough high school students interested in technical careers in manufacturing. Industry’s cannot find enough skilled engineers and technicians.

Reality Check (July 2011)

Successful Manufacturing in CA (Examples not from defense industries) HAAS Solar Turbines Robinson Helicopter Alcon Next Intent Schilling Robotics Edwards Lifesciences

HAAS Automation Oxnard, CA

Solar Turbines San Diego, CA

Robinson Helicopter Torrance, CA

Alcon Irvine, CA

Schilling Robotics Davis, CA

Next Intent San Luis Obispo, CA

Manufacturing Career Paths Where do students go after they finish high school ? High School Junior College Industry 4-Year University Low skill Technician Engineer

Manufacturing Jobs by education level Manufacturing jobs for low skilled workers has declined: - High school dropout - High school level education - Some college Manufacturing jobs for employees with college degrees has increased: - Bachelor’s degrees - Advanced degrees

Manufacturing Engineering at Cal Poly

Small number of applicants. Cannot meet industry demand – by far. Would like to grow the program. Accept first time freshman and transfer students.

Manufacturing Engineering at Cal Poly World class labs. – Hands-On, Learn by Doing. Faculty have industry experience and academic credentials. Excellent industry partnerships. but Do not graduate enough manufacturing engineers to meet industry’s demand.

Manufacturing Engineering at Cal Poly What are we doing? Promote manufacturing engineering careers among High School students. Articulation agreements with community colleges.

K-12 STEM Education What could be done? Help dispel the myth among high school students & parents, that manufacturing engineering careers in the US are in decline. Support engineering and technology courses in high schools. Help CSU on articulation agreements with HS for engineering & technology courses.
