CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Mobile services: Sunrise SWAP Rodrigo Sierra IT/CS

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Agenda CERN mobile services Sunrise SWAP Affected services Sites Planning 2

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t CERN Mobile services Mobile Services: –Single contract with our current Swiss operator (Sunrise) –GSM calls from Switzerland routed via the CERN telephone exchange –Voice and data services (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS) –Dedicated access to CERN’s Intranet –~ 5700 mobiles Infrastructure: –46 Sunrise sites at CERN –> 50 km of leaky feeder cable covering underground facilities –Repeating system to offer UMTS in the LHC Technologies: −GSM and UMTS (3G) −LTE (4G) in the future? 3 Leaky feeder cable

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Sunrise SWAP What? –Sunrise is replacing and upgrading their infrastructure Why? –New maintenance contract -> Huawei –Renewal of all equipment in Switzerland When? –Swiss-wide is on-going since several months –CERN will be swapped end of June How? –Base stations will be replaced one by one –Local service disruption (~ 1 hour) –No impact on end-users, only local coverage is affected 4

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t SWAP – How does it affect CERN? Renewal of the equipment: –More power efficient and compact 4 racks replaced by one in SD8 for example Renewal of the technologies: –Multi-technology equipment: 3G already pre-installed and 4G ready No need of more racks to add new technologies –UMTS for the underground facilities: Ready for PS, SPS, LINAC4, AD, TI2, TI8 and CNGS Deployment when the transmission is finished (2013) Maintenance: –LHC base stations intelligence deported to the surface (only RF repeaters underground) –Sunrise won’t need to access the tunnels 5

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t SWAP - Affected services GSM/UMTS services: –Local disruption during the intervention –Between 30 minutes and 2 hours Underground facilities: –SPS & AD interventions on Saturday –LHC tunnel interventions are transparent –LHC caverns & lifts at 4am –PS complex intervention on Sunday –TI2 at 4am –TI8 and CNGS at 8am Safety: –TETRA (new radio network) and red phones not affected 6

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Sites LHC: –8 sites on the surface covering the lifts and caverns –16 sites in the REs covering the tunnel Transfer lines and CNGS: –3 sites covering TI2, TI8 and CNGS SPS (8 sites) PS complex AD complex LINAC4 Surface: –Meyrin (2 sites) –Prevessin (2 sites) –SM18 Planning discussed with the coordinators of the sites 7

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Planning - Helicopter Helicopter needed: –Building 60 –Building 361 (PS complex) –SXU1 (half of the ATLAS cavern) –SZ33 (PZ33 lift - UJ33) Sunday 30 th June during the day –VICs already approved –Sunday 7 th July in case of bad weather 8

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Planning – LHC caverns ~ 1 or 2 hours interruption: –SD1 (ATLAS) 27 th June at 4am –SD2 (ALICE) 27 th June at 4am –SD5 (CMS): 26 th June at 4am –SD8 (LHCb) 26 th June at 4am –SD4: 27 th June at 4am –SD6: 28 th June at 4am –SD7: 28 th June at 4am 9

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Planning – LHC tunnel GSM signal is redundant: –The lost of 1 RE doesn’t interrupt the service –Around 30 minutes intervention time per RE 24 th June: –Sectors 1-2 & 2-3 –Sectors 1-8 & th June: –Sectors 3-4 & 4-5 –Sectors 5-6 &

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Planning – TIs & CNGS ~ ½ to 1 hour interruption –TI2 (surface building 3192) 28 th June at 4am –TI8 (TE80) 28 th June at 8am –CNGS (ECO4) 28 th June at 8am 11

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Planning - SPS 22 nd June (Saturday): –BA1 –BA2 –BA4 29 th June (Saturday): –BA3 –BA5 –BA6 –BA7 –BA80 12

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Planning – Meyrin/Prevessin AD complex –29 th June (Saturday) LINAC4 –25 th June at 11am Water tower –24 th June at 8am SM18 –26 th June at 11am Building 866 –25 th June at 8am Zone Nord –26 th June at 8am 13

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t Conclusions GSM service interventions 2 nd half of June –Local coverage disruptions –Underground facilities planned outside working hours How it affects CERN? –Equipment and technologies renewed –Possibility of adding data services in PS & SPS –Maintenance simplified 14
