What Will We Do When We Are There? Investigate local marine habitats such as: intertidal zones mud flats tidal pools rocky shorelines
Full use of the Huntsman teaching lab (which is a university and post doctorate level facility). The HMSC has three large teaching laboratories. Each lab has large dry benches for students to work at, as well as a wet bench with running saltwater for the creatures being studied.
Excursion time on the Fundy Spray the HMSC’s research vessel which includes the opportunity to explore the local islands to look at marine and terrestrial the wildlife, and a visit to a local estuary to sample benthic fauna using drags.
The main HMSC research vessel is the FUNDY SPRAY, a 50’ converted offshore lobster boat. The boat is certified by Transport Canada to carry 20 passengers and 2 crew, anywhere in the Bay of Fundy. The boat’s capabilities include bottom trawling, bottom dragging, sediment sampling, plankton sampling and most other types of oceanographic sampling. The FUNDY SPRAY has two wet holds to hold fish samples alive to be brought back to the lab.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS The program is considered a total immersion experience and participants will stay in Anderson House, our historic residence building. Since we are a field station, you will need to bring a sleeping bag and towel, along with your personal items. Pillows and pillowcases will be provided. Participants will share rooms. Meals are served in the dining hall at Anderson House. Cold breakfast is at 7:30 a.m., lunch at 12:00 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Meals are served in the dining hall at Anderson House. COURSE TIMETABLE We aim to spend half of each day in the field, and half in the lab or on tours. Departure times for field trips are set around the tide schedule and will vary from day to day. Field trips are run “rain or shine” and are only cancelled if the weather conditions are seen as dangerous. The daily timetable will normally include an evening session, but time for relaxation and recreation will also be provided.
