Common understanding Archiving = “a good thing” Need for clarity of conversation with every depositor -born-digital material is different to traditional paper archives different questions to ask -formats, hardware, software, passwords etc -potential for multiple identities (social media) different procedures to apply to the capture & transfer process Archiving the Arts | 16th Sept 2014 | 12

Challenges - content Range/mixture of formats and materials is quite common for a hybrid collection Ownership and rights - eg YouTube Turned-out to be easy to capture content off Kane’s Iphone files (11.1GB) and other files (Mac based) – not so easy! Archiving the Arts | 16th Sept 2014 | 13

Challenges - Facebook What can we do with Facebook content? -would people say different things (or say nothing at all) if the site said “…this will be archived and made available…” If we take a snapshot how often should we do this? -who should be responsible for this depositor/archivist Archiving the Arts | 16th Sept 2014 | 14

Archival arrangement Arrange the material to provide access, needed to consider – the creative process and creative output – think about the who (created it) and why – how a researcher (or an artist) might want to access the information/content in the collection – eg the Last Post & Last Supper into distinct sections Critical that arrangement doesn’t compromise the context or the understanding of the collection Our discussions have changed Kane’s view of both the creative process and issues surrounding the documentation of his work and perspectives about preserving it! Challenges – re-use Access and use of the archive are core principles -usually passive, access for historical research or inspiration Actively encouraging users to use the material as the basis for their own work (including de-constructing elements to use as the basis for something very different) is a radical departure 1.Material into the archive & catalogued as a hybrid collection 2.Selective digitisation - greater access to paper material 3.Engage with students to use (and re-use) the material Archiving the Arts | 16th Sept 2014 | 16
