Webquest about the Maya

We will be studying: 1.Chichen Itza 3.Tulum 4.Palenque 6.Tikal 8.Copan

Our class is going to take a virtual field trip to the Yucatan Peninsula to discover the many aspects of the Mayan way of life. The class will be split into groups of five, and each group will be assigned a different Mayan site to research. Each member of your group will have a special responsibility. The group will organize the information each person collects and present the information to the class in a powerpoint presentation.

The Travel Agent will research the area in which each Mayan site is located. Remember to include airfare, hotel, and travel inside the country (i.e., bus, taxi). What town is the ruin near? What is the closest airport? What transportation do you use to get to the site? How much does a guide cost to take you through the site? Make food and drink arrangements before, during, and after the tour. You might even want to include additional fun activities.

The Site Mapper will tell how the site is arranged, the principal buildings, and provide pictures of the major highlights of each site.

The Site Historian will tell when the site was built, when it reached its peak, and approximately when it was abandoned. Who were some of the great kings and what did they do? How many people lived there? What wars were fought? What might have caused the Mayan downfall?

The Hieroglyphics Expert will research the Mayan writing system and demonstrate how the ancient and modern Mayans communicated. Find out about the Mayan calendars.

The Artifacts Expert will find photographs or drawings of five Mayan artifacts (objects) that have been excavated. Tell where each artifact was found, what the artifact is, and how it was used. Where are some of the artifacts now stored or displayed?
