Presentation transcript:

Brief on HVDC 2015 Brief on HVDC 2015 Nowadays, the global projects and researches in HVDC are very actively planned and launched especially in EU, China, India and Brazil. • Promoting the current technical and policy making issues, a lot of discussion and technical meetings for HVDC have been challenged for the new perspective in HVDC world. • However, three main topics such as HVDC Application in Power Grid, HVDC Converter Station and Power Equipments for HVDC System are discussed separately in one way or another. • Therefore, we have been spending the enormous efforts to grasp the total strategic solutions and technical information on HVDC projects. • In this context, HVDC 2015 has been organized to provide the collective strategic and technical information for the policy making staffs as well as technical engineers in the major three topics - Power Grid, Converter and Power Equipments – and further to take the initial step for Super Grid in North East Asia (China-Korea-Japan-Russia).

Main and Sub Topics of HVDC 2015 I. HVDC Application on Power Grid 1) Analysis of AC/DC Power System 2) Planning and Operation of HVDCs in Transmission Networks 3) HVDCs for Renewable Power and Micro Grid 4) Application of DC Innovative Technology: DC Grid and DC Distribution 5) Experience from Practical HVDC Application 6) Other HVDC Power Grid Related Topics II. HVDC Converter Station 1) Novel Technology of VSC and CSC for HVDC Transmission 2) Network Topology of HVDC Converters for Off-shore Wind Farm Power Plant 3) Construction and Operation Aspects on HVDC Converter Station 4) Novel Circuit Topology and Control Circuit for HVDC Converter Operation 5) Universal Transformer for DC Distribution Networks 6) Other HVDC Converter Related Topics III. Power Equipments for HVDC System 1) HVDC Converter Transformer   2) AC/DC Filter and Reactive Power Compensating Equipments for HVDC System 3) HVDC GIS and Circuit Breaker 4) HVDC Series Reactor and Parallel Capacitor 5) HVDC Transmission Line (Overhead, Underground and Submarine Cable) 6) HVDC Insulation Coordination 7) Other HVDC related Equipments (HVDC Lightning Arrester, Insulator and so forth ....)

Main and Sub Topics of HVDC 2015 IV. Promotion Status and Future Plans of the North-East Asia Super Grid 1) Promotion Status and prospect s of Super Grid business in Europe 2) Super Grid Operation Experience between European Nations 3) Outline and Benefits of Super Grid 4) Prospects of Super Grid Market Volume 5) Status of the North-East Asia Super Grid 6) Technical Feasibility of Super Grid business in the North-East Asia 7) Economic/Legal Analysis of Super Grid business in the North-East Asia 8) Plan for Establishing the North- East Super Grid of KEPCO

High Capacity HVDC Application Needs for High Capacity HVDC Power system operation aspect The level of fault current in metropolitan area is increased up to the limit. HVDC could increase power system stability Difficulty of 765kV AC line construction 765kV AC T/L  Long construction period (severe public complaints) Lower land cost for HVDC T/L than one of HVAC Mitigate the issue of T/L construction

Continuously Increasing Power Demand Jeju Island HVDC Needs for HVDC in Jeju #3 Isolated network  2.5 times of mainland’s cost High Generating Cost • One of the most popular tourist place • Over 10% growth/year for last 20 years Continuously Increasing Power Demand Project Capacity Status #1 HVDC 300MW Existing #2 HVDC 400MW #3 HVDC 200MW Plan Confirmed (Completion 2017)

Off shore Wind Farms Connection Pyeongtaek -Dangjin PtP HVDC HVDC Construction Plan (Confirmed) • 1st and 2nd Stage : 345kV AC (2011~2016) - 345kV transmission line 22km, 500MW • 3rd Stage : 500kV HVDC (2017~2019) - Two PtP converter station(2GW) : Offshore, Land - Overhead and Cable Transmission Line 80km, 2GW Off shore Wind Farms Connection • Objective : Increase transmission capacity, reduce fault current • Installed facilities : PtP converter station(1.5GW x 2) • Completion : June. 2018(1st), June. 2021(2nd) Pyeongtaek -Dangjin PtP HVDC

Possible HVDC Application in Korea BTB: Back to Back (Frequency Conversion) PTP: Point to Point (Long Distance T/L) BTB type • Frequency Converter • Separation of AC networks  3 to 4 Projects for the Seoul Area and South-North Korea connection PTP type 1 • Long Distance Power Transmission  2 to 5 Projects for the replacement of AC 765kV and 345kV PTP type 2 • Submarine cable Transmission  2 to 3 Projects for the Jeju and Mainland connection  3 Projects between Korea and Russia, Japan, China
