WWI Review Goes with WWI Review Questions

Italy and Germany Formed Nations Italy formed a united kingdom under their leader named Cavour Under the leadership of Otto Von Bismarck, Germany was unified and with this unification and rise in power, the balance of power in Europe collapse.

WWI Titles ( ) Most of Europe became involved in WWI and most of European economies centered on providing resources for the war. This is the reason why WWI was also called The Great War and the Total War

M.A.I.N. Causes of WWI To help you remember the causes of WWI we used the acronym MAIN. Here’s what it stands for: M: Militarism A: Alliances I: Imperialism N: Nationalism

Militarism The “M” in MAIN stands for Militarism. What does it really mean? It is a race to arms It is a race to built larger armies It is a race to have mobilization plans ready to make sure you are ready to move

Schlieffen Plan Germany’s Plan of Attack: Attack France on the west Rush to fight Russia in the east This plan failed It caused Germany to split up it’s army and have to fight on Two fronts

Trench Warfare Fighting from ditches dug in the dirt along the war front Muddy, rat invested, cold, food scarce

New Ways of Fighting Fighting in the air using planes Submarines or U-boats Machine guns Poison gas Tanks

Total War WWI was a total war which meant that all the countries in the war devoted all their resources and economies to the war. Rationing took place, which was a limiting of goods people could buy, so that most of the goods could go towards the war Propaganda also took place, which was an advertising tactic used to encourage men to join the army to create pride of country, or to bash the other side.

Women and the War While the men were fighting in the war, what did the women do? Filled jobs previously held by men Built tanks, plowed fields, paved streets, ran hospitals Worked as teachers and nurses

The End is Near Russia withdraws from the war The Communists take over the country The Allies continue to pound Germany and eventually wins WWI An armistice or an agreement to stop fighting is signed on November 1918

Peace Talks On January 18, 1919, a conference to establish peace was held at the Palace of Versailles

Fourteen Points President Wilson’s Peace Plan Main Purpose was self-determination, which allowed people to decide what government they wished to live

Treaty of Versailles Created a League of Nations to keep peace among nations Punished Germany –Lost land –Made to pay for the cost of the war –“War Guilt” clause: the SOLE blame for the war was placed on Germany

Effects of the Treaty The “War Guilt” clause left a legacy of bitterness and hatred in the hearts of the German people. This eventually led to WWII
