Consequences of Germany’s Defeat in WWI

The consequences of Germany’s defeat in WW! Were far- reaching: The old Germany monarchy ended in The Weimar Republic, a democratic government began in 1918.

Inflation Inflation of high proportions arose. In 1919, a dollar was worth three marks. In 1921, a dollar was worth three trillion marks One needed a wheelbarrow full of money to buy one postage stamp.

Stab in the Back Anger grew among Germans who did not believe that Germany had really lost the war because German troops still occupied parts of France and there were no foreign troops on German soil. They though Germany had been “stabbed in the back” by the new government

Versailles Treaty November 1918 Germany surrendered unconditionally ( ). Treaty demanded that Germany pay large amounts of money (reparations) to the Allies (France, Eng, US) over 60 years. Germany to take sole responsibility for starting the war.

Broken Empire Austro-Hungarian Empire broken up. Austria becomes a Republic 700 year old Habspurg reign ended. Austrians and Germans felt forced into democray and resented it.

Result German society shaken by WWI loss All Germans felt insecure, frightened, angry and frustrated. Many find security in extremist political parties (Communist or Nationalist) No support for the new Weimar Republic Mood of country was violent and depressed.
