 Who Was Andrew Jackson?  How Did Andrew Jackson Earn the Nicknames “Old Hickory” & the “People’s President”?  How Did Andrew Jackson Become a Hero?  What is the Trail of Tears & What Role did Andrew Jackson Play in it?

 7 th President of U.S.  Born near border of North & South Carolina in 1767  Father died before he was born  He served in American Revolution & War of 1812  2 brothers & mother died as a result of the American Revolution  On his own at 14 yrs. old  Married Rachel & settled on a plantation (Hermitage) in Nashville, TN  A controversial individual

 He was appointed the major general of the Tennessee militia in the War of 1812  February He and his troops were sent to New Orleans for a British invasion.  The invasion never transpired, so he was ordered back to Nashville (no one received pay).

 First, he refused to disband.  Short on money and supplies, he walked along side of his men the entire 500 miles of wilderness back to Nashville.  His courage and determination earned him the nickname “Old Hickory” from his men.

 Andrew Jackson served in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812  Now…in War of 1812, there were 2 large groups of Native Americans called the Creeks & Cherokees  Creeks helped the British during the war of 1812  Cherokees helped the Americans fight against the Creeks  Andrew Jackson led his soldiers against Creeks  In March 1814, Creeks lost an important battle in Alabama (The Battle of Horseshoe Bend) & surrendered to Andrew Jackson  As a result, Creeks had to give most of their land in Alabama & Georgia to Americans in the East  Americans praised Andrew Jackson as a HERO for his war efforts & for gaining the land in Alabama & Georgia

That battle at Alabama was the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The video clip that we are about to see is about 9 ½ mins., in length, it depicts the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and helps us to get to know Andrew Jackson…Both the good and the bad.

 In 1835 thousand of Native Americans were forced to move to Oklahoma  Native Americans were sad about leaving their homes, farms, and villages  1 out of every 4 Native Americans became sick & died during the long, hard trip
