Page  8 What is an Audience Response System?  We love interactive lessons. Many students found the lessons more entertaining when their instant responses get collated and shared.  Audience Response System (ARS) Designed for collection of audience feedback and response in talks, shows / lectures.  Transmitters (nickname – clicker): sending out answers / polls. Receiver(s): collection of answers / polls Host: analyze of answers and present the result. clicker Receiver Host

Page  9 ARS Example: iClicker i-clicker remote i-clicker receiver RemoteReceiver Radio Frequency Operates at 915 MHz — no interference with campus WiFi technologies Range Feet CapacityUp to 1500 students per receiver proven Speed750 votes per second proven Reliability Rating.0007% defective rate.0125% defective rate

Page  10 A Homebrew ARS for CUHK  Some lecturers in CUHK had tried using clickers for lecture reviews or even quizzes.  I am interested to see how low the cost is to build a functional system.  A hardware project Design the clickers and the receiver  Also a software project Program the low-level clickers and handle connections between receiver and the host (usually PC or notebook)  If the project is successful, I will be the first one to use in the class and promote them to other lecturers as well.

Page  11 About the Project  Suitable for CE students  Platforms Microcontroller (8051/Arduino/ARM) PC (Windows/Linux)  Techniques Strong C/C++ programming Embedded system experience  Personality Enjoy development/debugging Innovative Self-motivated Arduino Board ($70) Friendly ARM ($350)

Page  12 For more Information/Discussion  Read the wiki page  Send me s  Drop by my office  Catch me at the fun room
