BPC: Art and Computation – Summer 2007 Lesson Plans 4 and 11 Corel Painter Image Manipulation and Painting Laura Giannitrapani

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Three course modules use Corel Painter Image manipulation – editing or combining images from photos, scans or other computer graphics sources. Painting - a paint system with very powerful and intuitive digital paint brushes and media. Flipbooks – simple animation creation and playback.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Why use Corel Painter? For creating and modifying images for mapping onto polygonal surfaces in the virtual environment –Standalone images –Surface textures – i.e. rock walls, animal fur –Create an animation from a sequence of images –Use alpha channels to create a cut out effect

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Frames from the Flipbook project View of the Fall’06 Final project

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Tutorials and Help Corel Painter Welcome page Lynda.com training DVDs Corel Painter User Guide

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Corel Painter “Welcome” page

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Lynda.com training DVDs

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Corel Painter User Guide

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer File Management Review the importance of saving and backing up files Describe to the students where they should save their files whether it’s on a file server, the local workstation, or a personal storage device. Describe the backup policies and procedures. –Students can backup their own files on CDs or USB keys –A systems person can backup a server.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer User Interface and primary menu structure Conduct a brief tour of the user interface and note where these items are and what they are used for: –Toolbox –Color palette –Mixer pad –Color sets –Brush menu –Property Bar

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer User Interface and primary menu structure Toolbox Color palette Mixer pad Layers Main menu Property bar Brush menu

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Additional palettes –Info –Layers –Channels

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Additional palettes for image manipulation Info Layers Channels

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Image Manipulation Understanding layers Tools and functions Images for DAFFIE

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Understanding Layers Layers provide a powerful and flexible method for composing and editing images. Various operations will generate new layers including: –Importing additional images –Copy and pasting

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Illustration of layers concept Individual layers Final image

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Tools and functions Rotation Cropping Scaling Selection Copy/paste

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Rotating the canvas Original image After rotation

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Selection and copy/paste Original image After selection, rotation, and copy/paste

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Tools and functions - continued Resolution Aspect ratio –The proportion of the width and height of and image –Should be consistent between the image file and the polygon that it will be mapped onto

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Tools and functions - continued Rubber stamp –For covering up unwanted image areas with an image “stamp” Eraser –Erase part of the upper layer to reveal part of the lower layer Alpha channels –For creating transparent areas in an image in VR

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Alpha Channels The optional fourth channel in a.tif file: – r + g + b + a Causes the file to be 32 bits rather than 24 bits. Use the channels menu for creating an alpha channel.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer The leaves are a texture map with an alpha channel. The leaves appear to be cut out of the texture map.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer The various ways to view an image with an alpha channel

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer RIF file format The.RIF format is Corel Painter’s native format which stores all of the layer information, brush information, and other information useful for editing and image. DAFFIE and Maya cannot read a.RIF file.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Images for DAFFIE Save a.tif file and convert to.rgb The.tif format supports alpha channels Memory is allocated in powers of 2: 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 The aspect ratio of the image should match the aspect ratio of the polygon

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Images for DAFFIE

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Painting

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Color mixing and selecting Can create a collection of custom mixer pads and color sets and save them for future use. Can create a color set from a mixer pad or an image. There are 16.7 million colors possible with Corel Painter. Color palette Mixer pad Color set

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Mixing colors exercise Students explored creating three families of colors: –Browns – rocks, ground fur –Blues – water, sky –Greens – trees, vegetation Students saved mixer pads and color sets for each of the three color groups.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Brushes Brush categories –Brushes, pens, pencils, chalk, airbrushes, palette knives Brush variants –For each type of tool, there are different sizes, opacities, grain, shape, stiffness, etc. to choose from.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Paper selector The paper selector in the toolbox has many options for canvases, paper types, wood grain, etc. for surfaces to paint on.

BPC: Art and Computation – Summer Kellen Shelendewa’s Brown Texture uses several brushes with different properties
