Background Information Titian (also known as Tiziano Vecelli) worked as a painter in Venice When he was ten to twelve, he was sent, along with his brother, to an uncle in Venice to gain an apprenticeship as a painter He trained in a sixteenth century Venetian school As he got older, people saw his work as “arte moderna,” paintings free from guidelines set up for art

Early Paintings This is believed to be one of Titian’s earliest paintings. It is called Ecce Homo. This painting called Salome was another one of Titian’s earlier works. It shows beauty, which was the theme of many of his pictures.

Titians Peak Giovanni Bellini was Titian’s mentor and when he aged, Titian rose to be the master of the Venetian school For sixty years Titian led the painting and received pension(an allowance) from the Senate After many famous paintings, most for churches, Titian reached the height of his fame in 1521

Church of the Frari The paintings above were two of Titian’s best known works. They were both located in the Church of the Frari. Assumption of the Virgin Pesaro Madonna This is a modern day picture of the Church of the Frari

Middle Years During the middle of his life, Titian did many paintings. Some of these paintings were considered to be his greatest works. The painting Saint Peter Martyr was one of his most famous, but was destroyed during an Austrian bombing Another painting, Battle of Cadore, was also one of the better known paintings, but this as well was destroyed in a fire.

Saint Peter the Martyr This is a copy of Titian’s painting, Saint Peter the Martyr. It is considered to be one of his greatest paintings. It shows many elements such as violence as well as suffering.

Later Years During the later years of his life, Titian became more and more of a perfectionist. It is said that it got in the way of his work because he left many paintings unfinished He would also take many years to do many final, insignificant details Titian worked many years for Phillip II doing portraits of his family Despite Titian’s struggles, he still produced many great paintings

Final Paintings This painting, The Death of Actaeon, was one of Titian’s final paintings

Titian’s Last Painting This painting, Pieta, is said to be Titian’s last painting. People think that he did this as an idea for his death.

Titian’s Family This painting, The Allegory of Age Governed by Prudence, is supposed to be Titian, his son, and a young cousin.

Self Portrait This is a self portrait of Titian, obviously done by Titian

Titian’s Legacy Today, many of Titian’s paintings are being privately sold for large sums of money. One painting, Diana and Actaeon, was recently sold for about $71 million to the Scottish government Titian changed art forever by introducing art to the world, free of guidelines and boundaries
