Frida Kahlo …I paint self portraits because I’m the person I know best. Self Portraits and Magic Realism

Facts about Frida Kahlo July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter.Mexican Kahlo was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent. Frida loved Mexico and was proud to be from there.

Kahlo was married to Mexican painter Diego Rivera. He was very famous. Diego Rivera Sometimes Frida’s paintings were considered less important than her husband’s paintings.

Frida Kahlo’s Challenges She had polio when she was five which resulted in one of her legs not working as well as the other. Frida was in medical school learning how to become a doctor when, in 1925, a bus accident caused severe injuries to her body owing to a pole that pierced her from the stomach to the pelvis. The medicine of her time tortured her body with surgical operations (32 throughout her life), corsets of different kinds and mechanical "stretching" systems. She had to quit medical school. That’s when she started painting. Lots of her works were painted laying in bed.

Frida Kahlo’s Style She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by Native cultures of Mexico and European influences, such as Realism, Symbolism and Surrealism.

Influences

Magic Realism Some people call Frida’s style Magic Realism. This is when magical elements occur in otherwise “normal” settings. Look for magic in the following self portraits.

Frida continues to inspire people with her unique painting style Cold Play’s “Viva la Vida” Coldplay - Viva La Vida Frontman Chris Martin told Rolling Stone that he christened this song and the album "Viva la Vida" - meaning "long live life" or more literally, "the life lives" - after he saw the phrase on a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. He explained: "She went through a lot of s--t, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva la Vida.' I just loved the boldness of it."

How will she inspire you?
